Car insurance changes are bad for consumers

The main purpose of auto insurance is to protect you, your family and the passengers in your vehicles if you are seriously injured in an automobile accident.

In 2009, auto accidents caused $2.55 billion dollars in economic losses in Wisconsin. In that year, 41,589 people were injured, 532 people were killed and 79,596 crashes resulted in property damage, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Parents, Caregivers Should Consider Safety Before Opening Windows

This week, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) joins the National Safety Council in recognizing National Window Safety Week and urges parents and caregivers to be aware of the dangers of leaving windows open when young children are present.

According to CPSC data, falls from windows result in an average of about eight deaths yearly to children five years or younger, while an estimated 3,300 children ages five and younger are treated each year in U.S. hospital emergency departments. On average, one of every three children, about 34 percent, required hospitalization after falling from a window.

These deaths and injuries frequently occur when kids push themselves against window screens or climb onto furniture located next to an open window. These incidents increase dramatically during the spring and summer months.

To help prevent injuries and tragedies, CPSC recommends the following safety tips:

  • Safeguard your children by using window guards or window stops.
    • Install window guards to prevent children from falling out of windows.
    • For windows on the 6th floor and below, install window guards that adults and older children can open easily in case of fire.
    • Install window stops so that windows open no more than 4 inches.
  • Never depend on screens to keep children from falling out of windows.
  • Whenever possible, open windows from the top – instead of the bottom.
  • Keep furniture away from windows to discourage children from climbing near windows.
  • Some jurisdictions require landlords to install guards. Check your local regulations.

Wausau Car Accident Causes Injuries

A two-vehicle roll-over crash in Wausau sent the driver of one vehicle to a local hospital this afternoon.  A driver of a car headed southbound on Eighth Street failed to stop at Stark Street.  The driver struck a minivan traveling eastbound on Stark Street, which rolled onto its side.  Injuries were reported.

The driver of the car was cited for failing to stop at the intersection.

Read more at Wausau Daily Herald.

Many people wrongly believe a citation to a driver in an accident results in a finding that the driver was “at fault” or “negligent” in a civil personal injury case associated with the accident.  This is not always true.  In fact, the citation (or lack of a citation) often isn’t even admissible in the personal injury case.  Thus, even if the other driver has been given a ticket, it is still important to contact a personal injury attorney as soon as possible if you have been injured in an accident. Bancroft Man Injured In Portage County Accident

A Bancroft man was severely injured in a car crash yesterday in the Town of Stockton.  He was driving north when his truck struck a white minivan that did not stop for a stop sign at the intersection.  His passenger was also injured.

Read more at Stevens Point Journal.

Failing to stop at a stop sign is a violation of a safety statute that usually results in a finding of negligence on the driver who failed to stop.  However, insurance carriers will dispute liability, even in cases involving stop signs.  Also, damages are almost always contested.  If you or someone you love have been injured due to someone failing to stop at a stop sign, you should contact a personal injury attorney right away to make certain your rights are protected.

Area schools are facing uncertain times, but one thing that is certain, three people will be elected to serve on the Wausau School District’s school board Tuesday.

Lance Trollop, a local attorney, says he’ll bring a unique set of skills if elected. “I have a background in education, I’m a product of the Wausau school district. I’m very proud of it.”

Despite the budget and program cuts school officials are facing, he said, bring it on.

“I actually think that those challenges are a good reason to run, so I don’t look at it as running despite those challenges I look at it as running because of those challenges.”
